Thomas B. Hunt papers, 1780-1881 (bulk 1859-1875).

The papers contain correspondence, notes, documents, and a portrait, all by or relating to Thomas B. Hunt after he moved west. There are over 100 letters, most of them written by Hunt to his family in Cowlesville, N.Y. Hunt's letters carry descriptions of the journey to Colorado and Montana, prospecting in Colorado and Montana, his work at mills in both places, the contents of his house in Colorado, the towns he lives in, illness, the success of former neighbors, and his ranch near Willow Creek. Hunt's letter of Feb. 16, 1861 includes a drawing of two men hard-rock mining. He writes primarily from Nevada City, Colorado, and then from Montana towns of Helena, Unionville, Willow Creek, Summit, Sheridan, and Rochester. Other correspondence within the family contains news of family and friends. There is in addition an offset lithograph portrait of Hunt, a page of notes on Hunt genealogy, and Hunt's obituary. Accompanied by a seemingly unrelated document appraising the rent of a room in the house of Joseph Leigh, dated Danbury, March 7, 1780, and signed by Eli Mygatt and Andrew Comstock.
